How to make your Remy hair last longer with the right care and maintenance

Hair Extension Care Routine

Basic care instructions

With proper care, your Remy hair extensions can last 6-12 months or longer. The key is to treat your hair gently and use the right products. Here is our complete guide to keeping your extensions in tip-top condition.

Wash your hair extensions properly

How often? Wash only when really necessary – about every 10-15 uses or when hair feels heavy from products.

Products for hair extensions

Step-by-step washing guide:

  1. Prepare: Brush through hair gently before washing to remove tangles
  2. Soak: Use lukewarm water (not too hot)
  3. Shampoo: Apply sulfate-free shampoo from top to bottom, massaging gently
  4. Rinse: Rinse thoroughly until the water runs clear.
  5. Conditioner: Apply conditioner from mid-length to ends, avoiding clips
  6. Wait: Let the conditioner work for 3-5 minutes
  7. Rinse again: Rinse with cold water for extra shine

Important: Always use sulfate-free products! Sulfates dry out your hair and shorten its lifespan.

Drying and styling

Best method: Let your hair air dry on a towel bar or hanger. This is gentle and preserves the hair's structure.

If you use a hair dryer:

  • Use low heat
  • Hold the hairdryer at least 15 cm from the hair.
  • Always use heat protection
  • Wipe from top to bottom

Styling with heat: You can use a straightener and curling iron, but always with heat protection and a maximum of 180°C. Avoid heating clips directly.

Brush correctly – avoid damage

Proper brushing of hair extensions

Correct technique:

  • Always start from the tops and work your way up
  • Use a special brush for extensions or a wide comb
  • Brush gently – never tug
  • Hold your hair close to the roots when brushing the ends.
  • Brush before and after each use

Tip: Never brush wet hair! Wait until it is almost dry or use a wide comb very carefully.

Storage – the key to long shelf life

Proper storage of hair extensions

Best storage methods:

  • Original packaging: Return the theses to the original box when not in use.
  • On a hanger: Hang the theses on a clothes hanger in the closet
  • In a bag: Store in a silk or satin bag to avoid friction
  • Flat: Lay flat in a box, never folded or tangled

Avoid: Never store in damp areas such as bathrooms. Keep out of direct sunlight.

Products to avoid

❌ Avoid these:

  • Products with sulfates (dries out hair)
  • Products with alcohol (makes hair brittle)
  • Heavy oils directly on clips (can make them slippery)
  • Color products without professional help
  • Chlorinated water without protection

Recommended products

✓ Use these:

  • Sulfate-free shampoo for colored/treated hair
  • Deeply moisturizing conditioner
  • Heat protection spray (before styling)
  • Light hair oil for the ends (not for clips)
  • Wide comb or special extension brush

Common mistakes to avoid

1. Sleep with your hair extensions in
Always take out your hair extensions before sleeping. Friction against the pillow can cause tangled hair and wear on the clips.

2. Washing too often
Hair extensions don't need to be washed as often as your own hair. Overwashing dries out your hair.

3. Too much heat
Stay below 180°C when using heat styling. Higher heat can permanently damage your hair.

4. Improper storage
Throwing your hair extensions into a box or bag without brushing them first creates tangled hair.

5. Apply products at clips
Avoid getting products on clips – it can make them slippery and less safe.

Quick Guide: Daily Care

Before use: Brush gently from top to bottom

After use: Brush again and store properly
